OUR STORY

Biophilic design and laid-back luxury coupled with responsible tourism determine the philosophy of this privately owned lodge. Allowing nature to dictate the design, the lodge has been built to connect people with the environment, maximising views and the use of natural, local materials. Eco Certifications

Just as we admire each of our hosts for their singularity, we appreciate that their sustainability journeys are also unique. Because of this, we do not require our hosts to have an eco certification or two under their belt, we simply guide them on improving their sustainable business practices one imperfect – but positive – step at a time. If a host has eco certifications they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

NGOs & Local Impact Projects Supported

Each of our hosts strive to have a positive impact on their local communities. Some of our hosts already have established connections with local partners to enrich the lives and wellbeing of their communities, others are in the process of creating these long term relationships. If a host has local NGO connections they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Cumbana Agricola Pre-Primary School

There is no pre-primary school in the vicinity of our our community. Even the Grade 1 children attending the closest state Primary School children have to walk about 4km to get to their classes, and back. Without the Village school, the kids would simply hang around unoccupied whilst the parents are working the fields and/or would most likely be roped in with work as well.

The school gives them a meaningful purpose in the mornings and plays an important role with early childhood development. Even more important is the language development; the teaching language at Mozambique’s school is Portuguese, however in the very rural areas, it is not unusual for people to only speak their regional languages. The Village school teaches the children numbers, colours, alphabet and basic knowledge in Portuguese, giving them a head start when they enter Primary School later.

What our hosts say..

Transparency is essential if we are all going to grow and improve together and this is why we have dedicated this section to sharing what we love about each place and its hosts. We work with each of our hosts to improve their guest experiences, sustainability practices and local impact, this is where you can learn more about that along with what still needs to be improved, the measures being taken to ensure our hosts continue to move forward and every now and then we’ll come back to update you on their progress.

On the southeast coast of Africa, an elongated country stretches over 2500km from South Africa to Tanzania along the continent: Mozambique. The former Portuguese colony is an insider tip among Africa lovers who are looking for a contrast to the mainstream destinations of the Indian Ocean. Travessia Beach Lodge is located on an endless beach of over 200 kilometers. The boutique eco lodge nestles between the coastal forest and the dunes lining the never-ending beach of this pristine coast. The Indian Ocean invites you to enjoy a daily swim with warm temperatures all year around.

With the concept and design echoing the surrounding nature, Travessia provides the ultimate discreet barefoot luxury tropical hideaway, all while ensuring a responsible tourism philosophy throughout the running of the lodge.

What began as a labour of love for two families of South African, Namibian and European origins has become an integral part of the dynamics of the small communities scattered between the coast, Casava fields and coconut palms. A hidden paradise.

WE ARE YOUR HOSTS –
Adel and Ben

Living and working in remote parts of Africa, problems aren’t simply solved by picking up the phone and calling an expert. That is why we, the owners, are so blessed having found Adel and Ben as Travessia’s lodge managers.

Adel is a whizz with a chef’s knife, from bush camp cooking to weddings and private dinners. Ben, a former South African long bow champion, is not only a master of all motor works but also a carpenter with skilled hands. Peacefully observant, his attention to detail matches Adel’s creative thinking.

With their intuitive minds, great understanding of guest relations and a passion for living in diverse locations, they are the kind of “specialised allrounder” that you need for a place like Travessia. Under their leadership, our team grew to earn us a consistent 5* for service. Always happy to welcome guests and with an unparalleled willingness to go the extra mile.
