Over its four centuries of existence, the Dar (historic house) has undergone several transformations, and today it operates as an intimate seven-room boutique hotel. The restoration process meticulously preserved its historic architectural integrity, including elements like poles and stones sourced from the ruins of Carthage. Guests will find rooms decorated with intricate gypsum and stone carvings, hand-painted tiles, and ornate painted-wood ceilings.

When you step outside the house, you are immediately part of the neighbourhood’s daily life: you will see children walking to school, smell what the neighbours are cooking and observe men sitting in cafés or women buying bread from the local baker. This everyday scene tells the story of a whole culture. The narrow streets, originally made for carts and horses, lead you towards the bustling souks, just a short walk away. Here, the sounds, sights, and smells have remained dynamic for centuries, constantly evolving with the social and economic life of the Medina.

Dar Ben Gacem offers an intimate cultural experience in the heart of the 7th-century Medina of Tunis, akin to visiting a luxurious private home, where the resident chef, Amel, prepares authentic, home-cooked Tunisian meals like couscous and local tajines upon request. For a more immersive experience, guests can also participate in a cooking class with Amel, which begins with a shopping trip to the Marché Central for fresh ingredients and culminates in a hands-on lesson to learn the secrets of her delicious Tunisian dishes.

Through our network of local artisans and youth, we offer guests additional unique experiences such as calligraphy workshops, Medina tours, musical performances and perfume making. We specialise in hosting families, family reunions and team-building events, and have proudly welcomed guests from 68 nationalities for specialised, themed retreats.

Por ello, no exigimos a nuestros anfitriones que cuenten con una o varias certificaciones ecológicas, sino que simplemente les orientamos para que mejoren sus prácticas empresariales sostenibles paso a paso, de forma imperfecta, pero positiva. Si un anfitrión cuenta con certificaciones ecológicas, estas se mostrarán a continuación; si no es así, tened por seguro que estamos trabajando juntos para conseguirlo.

Ancestral Water Harvesting

Dar Ben Gacem has taken on the task of reviving the ancestral water harvesting technique, which was abandoned, but is still present under all Medina’s courtyards. The project will create a pilot underground water cistern restoration alongside the integration of a hydraulic system, to revive ancient rain water harvesting knowledge and the use of water, making the Medina more resilient.

Nuestros esfuerzos

As a social enterprise, we collaborate with our community and partner with small businesses in our neighbourhood, to provide the most authentic experience and create shared economic opportunities.

The hotel is deeply embedded in its community: all staff and suppliers are from the Medina and all profits are reinvested into restoring other historical properties.
We offer in-house meals upon request, all ingredients are purchased the same day from Tunis’ central market, where farmers, fisherman and butchers sell their produce.

All decorative pieces in our hotel were made by Tunisian artisans and all restoration work was done by skilled craftsmen.
When needed we provide Red Crescent (Medina branch) with food for those in need.
We collaborate with JCI El Medina, by providing them with space to meet and plan skills development training for their members.
We often provide pro-bono support and volunteer opportunities, especially related to skills development, for informal youth groups in the community.
Dar Ben Gacem has a collection of mural tiles, 15th century to 19th century, presented in its sister hotel’s basement – Dar Ben Gacem Kahia – as a journey of Tunisian tile colours, shapes and designs spanning centuries of architecture and design. In addition, over 400 traditional ceramic pieces are presented all over the Dar itself.

Public Garden

Dar Ben Gacem ‘adopted’ a public garden in the Medina of Tunis, where we support youth who would like to organise public space activities such as film projection, climate awareness, planting, chess contests and other community activities to keep public space green, clean, happy and safe for children and women.

Dar el Harka

As a social enterprise, Dar Ben Gacem, covers the logistical needs of Dar el Harka: a community space for youth, artisans and creators and a co-working space for Medina guests, co-workers and the nomad community. Perfectly located between the two Dar Ben Garcem Dars, with good internet access, a printer, projector, meeting room and lots of positive vibes.

Mdinti

Dar Ben Gacem is a proud co-founder and member of Mdinti: the perfect address to plan your Medina experiences. Mdinti organises Medina tours, treasure hunts, artisan workshops and customised visitor packages. An economic interest group, uniting Medina’s micro-businesses, members are Medina’s artisans, restaurants and guesthouses.
