Shel Ladakh

Experience Ladakhs’ mystical beauty in this homestay blending sustainable luxury, ancestral wisdom and hospitality with modern design

Shel is a contemporary home with a traditional soul.

The first of its kind in the area, Shel Ladakh, is a private home with a deeply rooted sense of hospitality. It is a combination of sustainable luxury, ancestral wisdom, modern design and natural materials. Surrounded by the raw beauty of the Himalayas and the Indus, it is the perfect gateway to explore the extraordinary mystical mountain region of Ladakh. What stands today as a traditional facade was once a generational home built of wood and mud bricks.

Every element at Shel has been carefully thought through and placed so as to not intrude on the beauty of the natural world around us. Each of our three luxury Suites features a private balcony, en-suite bathrooms and large windows that frame the mountains and landscape outside.

The landscape, culture, and history of Ladakh have inspired many travelers, and Shel is the perfect base from which to set out on a journey through this vast Himalayan region. Whether it is a picnic by the river that invigorates you, or the majestic art and history of the monasteries, a spiritually fulfilling deep dive into Buddhist history and traditions or a wander in the wild, there is something for everyone.

Perfect for groups of friends or families travelling together, Shel can accommodate 6 guests in three individually designed Suites inspired by the various regions of Ladakh. The spacious suites make for the perfect setting off point for your Himalayan adventure as well as a great space for intimate events or holidays.

Our location on the banks of the legendary Indus River means you wake up to breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the mighty Himalayas and the sonorous hum of the mighty river surrounded by the bird life that inhabits our neighbouring Shey marshes. Our food lies at the core of your experience at Shel. From using locally grown seasonal produce to curating each guests’ menu individually, we take a deep interest in the food that our kitchen creates.

We only take one booking at a time so the minute you check in, we are fully booked.

Activities

  • Explore: Walk through the winding roads of the quaint village of Shey (formerly known as Shel) to the palace for beautiful views from the top and to discover ancient 8th century Tibetan wall art.
  • Thiksey Monastery: Located just five minutes from us, Thiksey Monastery is a wonderful place to start the day. With immersive morning prayers where guests can partake in the ceremony with young and old monks, take in breathtaking views of the valley and experience Buddhist culture, this is one of our most recommended excursions.
  • Hemis festival: Join us to indulge in an experience where divinity, spirituality, culture and colour combine in a way you have not witnessed before in this annual event.
  • Birdwatching: A plethora of winged visitors makes Ladakh an ornithologists paradise throughout the year. We have a very healthy population of migratory birds as well as those that are endemic to the region and Shey marshes are one of the best spots for birdwatching in the area. Our proximity to the marshes means a spill over of the bird population there into our premises making it a perfect spot for birdwatching without even leaving the comfort of your room at times!
  • Hikes: Put on your boots and step into the wonderlands that surround us. Day hikes are a great way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region while also spending time with the family. Whether it is walking by the river and in the marshes or a slow climb up the mountains that catches your fancy, there is something for everyone here.
  • Stargaze: Summer skies in Ladakh are a thing of beauty indeed and our location away from the glittering city lights means the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye from your private balcony.
  • Polo: Set against the backdrop of the mighty Himalayas and in this tough, unforgiving terrain, the rich history of polo in Ladakh dates back to the 15th century. Polo is an integral part of this land and The Ladakh Polo Festival is a great time to be here. Along with the games, the festival also has various performances and local food stalls that are great to experience Ladakhi culture as a whole.
  • Relax in the library: Acclimatise in the warm comfort of our library as you take it easy on your first day in Ladakh. Located at an altitude of over 11,000 feet, acclimatising plays a huge role in how the rest of your holiday will pan out and here at home, we make sure you get the comfort you need on your first day.

Your Hosts - The Team at Shel Ladakh

At Shel, it is our common endeavour to elevate the level of hospitality and the experience our guests have. A one-of-a-kind place in Ladakh, Shel only takes one booking at a time thus maximising the amount of detailing that goes into any guests’ stay with us. If you are our guest, you are the only one thus the entire team works as one to ensure that your stay with us is as comfortable as being at home with the added luxury of having your own private entourage of staff to cater to your every whim.

Being located in a remote village outside the capital of Leh means uninterrupted views of the wonderful Himalayan countryside as well as peace, quiet and front row seats to the wonders of nature on a daily basis. At Shel, we feel luxury cannot be conveyed only through design, it needs to have soul and sensitivity.

Our team strives to bring the best for each guest as individuals as well as through their shared vision and connection to the land. We eat what we grow seasonally and make a lot of our consumables at home, we support our local community by purchasing produce from them, we recycle our waste and dispose of everything responsibly, we are paper and plastic free unless absolutely necessary and we do our best to alleviate the local feral dog problem by adopting and neutering the stray dogs in our vicinity.

Our shared goal is to develop tourism in Ladakh in a sustainable manner by attaching value to this model of growth. By taking small steps towards a larger picture, we hope to continue to bring purpose to what we do as a team.

Our insights..

Transparency is essential if we are all going to grow and improve together and this is why we have dedicated this section to sharing what we love about each place and its hosts. We work with each of our hosts to improve their guest experiences, sustainability practices and local impact, this is where you can learn more about that along with what still needs to be improved, the measures being taken to ensure our hosts continue to move forward and every now and then we’ll come back to update you on their progress.

Eco Certifications & Efforts

Just as we admire each of our hosts for their singularity, we appreciate that their sustainability journeys are also unique. Because of this, we do not require our hosts to have an eco certification or two under their belt, we simply guide them on improving their sustainable business practices one imperfect – but positive – step at a time. If a host has eco certifications they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Eco Efforts

Our Efforts

  • In an effort to reduce electricity consumption, we harness the power of the extreme sun in Ladakh and use it to warm our dishes before meals. We have found this small step goes a long way in reducing the amount of electricity we would have otherwise consumed on a regular basis.
  • We are a paper free property and all our communication with guests is paperless except for mandatory forms.
  • We use the local canal system to water our gardens thus not putting any stress on the ground water supply available to us.
  • Most of our ingredients are sourced locally – the milk, cheese and eggs we use are sourced directly from local farmers in our neighborhood through animals who are treated with care. We also source bread from the corner bakery and veggies from our farm. This is our effort to support our local community and also helps us avoid plastic packaging.
  • All our food waste is responsibly disposed – to our neighbours’ cows as feed or turned to compost for manure used in our gardens. Along with this, since most of our food is made in-house or sourced locally, our dependence on packaged food is minimal thereby effectively reducing plastic waste.
  • Made of natural local materials and being a south facing house, our heating system in the house is naturally efficient and effective. The mud bricks absorb the heat of the sun in the day thus keeping the house naturally warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
  • Sustainability is at the core of how we run our home, for if a house is not sustainable it will eventually run itself and its environment to the ground. In this effort, we have done our best to incorporate small but critical measures into the building of our home. Our almost floor to ceiling windows mean the house is always flooded with glorious natural light throughout the day thus reducing our electricity consumption.
  • The house is made in a way that each of the room windows face south and have the best of the sun through the day, making it passive solar efficient. During the colder months these double glazed windows help keep the warmth of the sun indoors thus maintaining temperatures that are far higher than those outside. During the summer our mud bricks ensure the rooms remain cool and comfortable even if it is hot outside.
  • Our water is heated via a solar system and our soak pits ensure that the used water is suitably recycled to be used on the grounds around us. We ensure that all our cleaning and laundry products are chemical free so that when the water goes back to the soil, it does not pollute the groundwater
  • In an effort to preserve, restore and regenerate the land around us, we plant hundreds of local seeds and saplings every year and the appearance of indigenous wild flowers in our garden is a testament to the fruit of our efforts. Left to itself, nature has a wonderful way of restoring itself and we are constant learners from it.
NGOs & Local Impact Projects Supported

Each of our hosts strive to have a positive impact on their local communities. Some of our hosts already have established connections with local partners to enrich the lives and wellbeing of their communities, others are in the process of creating these long term relationships. If a host has local NGO connections they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Live To Rescue

Live to rescue

Live to Rescue – In the cold desert of Ladakh, scarcity of food and water along with extreme temperatures has been deadly for the growing stray dog population. To provide a loving shelter for the animals and preventing death by starvation, the Live to Rescue centre was founded in 2008. At Shel, guests can volunteer a donation towards the rescue and rehabilitation of stray dogs that we match and donate to this organisation.

PAGIR - Dolkhar Ladakh, India

PAGIR

PAGIR is a rights-based movement and works for advocating the inclusive rights of the differently-able people of our society. The main focus is to create an environment that ensures inclusion of differently abled persons in mainstream society. At Shel, we source our recycled paper products as well as other things like picnic cushions etc from PAGIR.

Ahista Tea - Shel Ladakh, India

AHISTA Tea

In keeping with our value of slowing down and doing things with intention, Ahistea takes a minimalist approach in savouring each moment with thoughtfulness. Their teas are infused with tradition and are sustainable and organic certified while their products are handmade by women. We at Shel always appreciate like-mindedness and are delighted to be collaborating with them.
