Lagar de Santa Magdalena

El Lagar de Santa Magdalena, a 19th-century winery specialising in Pedro Ximénez grapes, beckons wine lovers with tours, tastings and the beauty of its historic vineyards

El Lagar de Santa Magdalena, located in the heart of the Cordoba countryside, historically famous for the quality of its vineyards, has been making its wines since the 19th century with the Pedro Ximénez grape, which is native to the area. We welcome small groups and pre-arranged visits to discover the beauty of our winery, its surroundings and enjoy wine tastings.

Vinos Finos, Generosos and Blancos, with eternal aromas of yeast, old wood, spices and raisined fruits, with saline, iodized, sweet and dry, bitter and intense flavours, wines that evoke the soil, the grape and the evolution of their ageing. Thanks to the ageing in American oak casks, in which the wine is transformed by the yeasts of the veil of flor or by oxygen for long periods of time, we obtain these jewels of world oenology.

Built in 1831, this vineyard and olive grove estate is located in the Moriles Altos estate, the most famous of Montilla Moriles for the quality of its wines. In 1906, it was acquired by Doña Cecilia Burgos y Álvarez de Sotomayor, III Countess of Colomera.

On 6 March 2015, her descendants, Antonio Alarcón and Chea Madrid, his wife, acquired ‘Santa Magdalena’, restoring the wine press and taking care of the estate and soleras of its winery, with the hope of preserving for the future this valuable historical and winemaking legacy, Heritage of Córdoba and Montilla Moriles Designation of Origin.

Eco Certifications & Efforts

Just as we admire each of our hosts for their singularity, we appreciate that their sustainability journeys are also unique. Because of this, we do not require our hosts to have an eco certification or two under their belt, we simply guide them on improving their sustainable business practices one imperfect – but positive – step at a time. If a host has eco certifications they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Proyecto Alzacola

Proyecto Alzacola Rojizo

It’s a biodiversity promotion project focused on the Redstart bird (Erythropygia galactotes), also known as the Collared Flycatcher or Colitajara. It’s located in Spain, in the southern half of the peninsula where the Redstart breeds. The project is a collaborative effort between the Fundación Social Universal (Social Universal Foundation), the association Harmusch and the ecotourism group EPOPS. It focuses on a social, biological and economic approach to conservation. They involve the local community, study the Redstart population and explore ways to make conservation economically beneficial.
