Uganda is home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas, but they are threatened by habitat loss, poaching and economic instability. Gorilla Conservation Coffee pays a premium to coffee farmers living near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to protect the endangered mountain gorillas and their habitat.

Gorilla Conservation Coffee was selected as the No. 29 coffee on Coffee Review’s list of the Top 30 Coffees of 2018. Kanyonyi Coffee Blend is named after the former lead silverback gorilla of Mubare Gorilla Group, the first group habituated for tourism at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda.

Gorilla Conservation Coffee pays a premium of $0.50 per kilo above the market price to coffee farmers living close to the gorillas around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, as well as supporting them with training in sustainable coffee farming.

Your Host - Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka

Gorilla Conservation Coffee is a social enterprise of Conservation Through Public Health, founded by Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, the first Wildlife Veterinary Officer of the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Dr. Gladys recently became a National Geographic Explorer and winner of the Sierra Club’s 2018 EarthCare Award, along with other prestigious awards.

In the legacy of the late Dian Fossey, Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka has become one of the leading conservationists and scientists working to save the critically endangered mountain gorillas of East Africa. She is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), a nonprofit organization, founded in 2003, that promotes conservation by improving the quality of life of people and wildlife to enable them to coexist in and around protected areas in Africa.

Just as we admire each of our hosts for their singularity, we appreciate that their sustainability journeys are also unique. Because of this, we do not require our hosts to have an eco certification or two under their belt, we simply guide them on improving their sustainable business practices one imperfect – but positive – step at a time. If a host has eco certifications they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Fairmade

Gorilla Conservation Coffee is “Fairmade.” It goes beyond Fairtrade by paying above Fairtrade prices. It is also roasted and packaged in Uganda creating 3-5X more social impact and more job employment opportunities for women and locals.

Our Efforts

Fairtrade certification is unfortunately very expensive–especially for smallholder farmers in Bwindi. Our fair-chain, transparent model ensures that each farmer receives 50 cents more per kilogram of coffee and has a meaningful and sustainable livelihood.

Each of our hosts strive to have a positive impact on their local communities. Some of our hosts already have established connections with local partners to enrich the lives and wellbeing of their communities, others are in the process of creating these long term relationships. Our Efforts

Unlike other coffees that just donate to protect gorillas, Gorilla Conservation Coffee has a two-fold benefit.

First, it sources coffee directly from the areas around the endangered mountain gorillas, which prevents locals from going into the forest to cut down their habitat. It also pays farmers a premium price, which prevents poaching and helps the community have a positive appreciation for these critically endangered animals.

Second, a portion of every bag sold goes to Conservation Through Public Health which furthers the conservation and health of gorillas, locals, and bio-diversity.
