A Quinta da Auga

Immerse yourself in an oasis of luxury hidden amongst nature in a city that will transport you to a bygone era; Santiago de Compostela

The philosophy of A Quinta da Auga eco-hotel, located in the city where the Camino de Santiago culminates, is based on personalisation, maximum attention to detail and the fusion between tradition and modernity as befits an authentic Relais & Châteaux. Its Filigrana Restaurant is committed to haute cuisine, its cafeteria has become the ideal refuge for travellers and in its luxury Spa you can enjoy the best therapies from East and West.

Settled on what was a monumental paper mill in the 18th century and cradled by the sound of the Sar River, the character and personality of A Quinta da Auga is unique. Immerse yourself in an oasis of luxury hidden amongst nature in a city that will transport you to a bygone era; Santiago de Compostela.

Enjoy a journey through the flavours of our best ingredients; each prepared respectfully and healthily, with a touch of innovation and careful presentation.

Delight your senses in our spa; a space of sensations dedicated to creating a serene, relaxing and meditative environment to enjoy all the properties of hydrotherapy.

The beauty of our outdoor spaces, the careful and personalised decoration of our rooms and the quality of the gastronomy of our restaurant, make us one of the most impressive places in Galicia for the celebration of weddings and other special events.

Your Hosts - The two Luisas and the team

A Quinta da Auga is a family and personal project. Architect by profession, María Luisa García Gil fell in love with an abandoned building because of the potential she saw in it. She was in charge of carrying out the project that is today A Quinta da Auga and represents the soul of the establishment. Along with her, day by day and from the beginning, her daughter, Luisa Lorenzo, the current Maître de maison, accompanies her on this adventure.

Two brave women who decided to drop everything and bet on creating “one of those magical hotels: warm, elegant and in which travellers were not clients, but guests”.

The fact of being a family business contributes to the feeling of home that is transmitted in every corner of the property, accentuated by the good service and hospitality of the entire team, which is already constituted as a family.

Our insights..

Transparency is essential if we are all going to grow and improve together and this is why we have dedicated this section to sharing what we love about each place and its hosts. We work with each of our hosts to improve their guest experiences, sustainability practices and local impact, this is where you can learn more about that along with what still needs to be improved, the measures being taken to ensure our hosts continue to move forward and every now and then we’ll come back to update you on their progress.

Eco Certifications & Efforts

Just as we admire each of our hosts for their singularity, we appreciate that their sustainability journeys are also unique. Because of this, we do not require our hosts to have an eco certification or two under their belt, we simply guide them on improving their sustainable business practices one imperfect – but positive – step at a time. If a host has eco certifications they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Eco Efforts

Our Efforts

From the moment of its creation, A Quinta da Auga has been designated as an example of environmental sustainability by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the energy systems it has. We have an ongoing commitment to embracing advanced technologies while preserving the heritage of our historic buildings. We have turned to a variety of tactics including micro-cogeneration (cooled by water from the nearby Sar River), which uses gas to meet the Quinta’s entire domestic hot water demand, as well as electricity, to reduce energy consumption by 40% compared with traditional methods.

Eco Efforts

Filigrana Restaurant

Our Filigrana Restaurant also has the “Slow Food” quality seal that accredits our involvement with traditional and regional cuisine using the resources of the local ecosystem. There is no need to import materials from other places, with the consequent environmental damage that this causes. A Quinta da Auga promote local small businesses and quality organic products.

Eco Efforts

Our Efforts

We have fitted 15 solar panels, carefully concealed to preserve the views of the hotel’s fine architecture. Additionally, we have moved to geothermal heating and cooling of the entire building, using a system of 150m-deep wells and heat pumps. It makes use of the building’s ancient, thick stone walls –as well as careful insulation of floors and ceilings– to deliver considerable savings over conventional approaches.

NGOs & Local Impact Projects Supported

Each of our hosts strive to have a positive impact on their local communities. Some of our hosts already have established connections with local partners to enrich the lives and wellbeing of their communities, others are in the process of creating these long term relationships. If a host has local NGO connections they will be shown below, if not, then know we are working towards this together.

Community Commitment

Collaboration with NGOs

Since our inauguration we have collaborated with various local associations and international NGOs, each collaboration adds to the annual initiatives that we take in line with social responsibility, such as Earth Hour. Some of them are: Red Cross and Caritas, with whom we have internship agreements; Action Against Hunger, with food donations; AMICO, with initiatives in favour of the social integration of people at risk of exclusion; UNICEF, with donations from our reserves.
